Award-Winning Bay Area Artist to Create Traveling Mural Celebrating Asian Heritage at San Francisco School

More Than 5,000 Comcast Employees Work at 16 California Schools or
Community Organizations During 16th Annual
Comcast Cares Day
LIVERMORE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Saturday, April 22nd, more than 5,000 Comcast
NBCUniversal employees and their families, friends and community
partners will volunteer to improve schools and communities throughout
California as part of the 16th annual Comcast
Cares Day.
In San Francisco, Comcast has engaged Bay area artist and activist Dave
Young Kim to create a one-of-a-kind traveling mural designed to
celebrate key moments in Asian Pacific American history and culture. Mr.
Kim will initiate work on the mural alongside students, parents,
residents, elected officials and Comcast volunteers at Sutro Elementary
School.
The completed mural will be unveiled at San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee’s
Asian Pacific Islander Heritage celebration presented by the APA
Heritage Foundation on May 1st before an audience of more
than 600. The mural will then travel to schools in at least five San
Francisco supervisorial districts throughout the month of May as part of
a cultural education tour called the “APA Heritage Youth Education
Project.”
Working in partnership with the APA Heritage Foundation and the
Community Youth Center, the educational project is created to inform
students from the San Francisco Unified School District about Asian and
Pacific Islander heritage and the significant contributions of the API
community throughout history.
To provide ongoing support of initiatives within the Asian American
community, Comcast will also make a donation of $25,000 to the Asian
Pacific American Heritage Foundation. This contribution will be
presented by David L. Cohen, Comcast’s Senior Executive Vice President &
Chief Diversity Officer to Claudine Cheng, Chair of the 2017 APA
Heritage Celebration Committee during a ceremony at Sutro Elementary,
beginning at 8:00 a.m. Also attending are: San Francisco Supervisor,
District 1 (and Sutro school alumnus) Sandra Lee Fewer, State
Senator Scott Wiener and State Assemblymember Phil Ting,
along with Comcast executives John Gauder, California Regional Vice
President; Martha Soehren, Sr. Vice President, Chief Talent Development
Officer; and Samuel Schwartz, Chief Business Development Officer.

reach and impact we can have as we seek to provide education about the
vital role Asian Americans have played throughout history, especially
here in San Francisco,” said Claudine Cheng, Chair of the 2017 APA
Heritage Celebration Committee. “The traveling mural by Mr. Kim is such
a creative way to spread the message, whether we’re engaging with young
children, older kids or adults. Using art and visual storytelling to
showcase the contributions and impact of all types of Asian people is so
powerful. Everyone can relate. We are proud and thankful to have a

American community.”
In addition to creating the mural with Mr. Kim, on Cares Day local
Comcast employees and their families will join with students and their
families, as well as other volunteers, to spend the morning planting,
installing benches, painting, landscaping and cleaning up the grounds at
Sutro Elementary School. They will be posting creative selfies
throughout the day using the hashtag #ComcastCaresDay.
