Based on the Ayla IoT Platform, the Para-Care Smart Mattress Aims to Reduce Sleeptime Deaths in Elderly Patients

SANTA CLARA, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#IoT–A smart mattress from healthcare company Para-Care incorporates Ayla
Networks
Internet of things (IoT) platform technology to provide
timely updates on a sleeper’s physiological condition. The smart
mattress is aimed at helping reduce the number of sudden deaths from
coronary diseases among elderly people as they sleep.

“The Ayla IoT platform gave us the comprehensive, end-to-end IoT
solution we needed to incorporate intelligent control from the mattress
itself to the cloud, and to deliver a reliable, secure connected
product,” said Tim Chen, founder of Para-Care.
“With the help of Ayla’s IoT technology, Para-Care is able to provide
stable and continuous monitoring data on elderly patients, especially in
situations where round-the-clock care is difficult to achieve.”

“Para-Care represents another example of a healthcare success story
built using the enterprise-class Ayla IoT platform,” said Phillip
Chang, co-founder, vice president and general manager of Greater China
for Ayla Networks. “We plan to continue investing in this area so that
more people can benefit directly from IoT technology.”

Para-Care Smart Mattress Improves Healthcare of Elderly Patients

In China, where Para-Care is based, it is reported that there were more
than 222 million people over the age of 60—and that 60 percent of them
suffer from myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular and
cerebrovascular diseases. Each year, more than a million Chinese elderly
people die suddenly of various coronary diseases, more than half the
time while asleep. As a result, there’s no time to take advantage of the
“golden five minutes” for cardiopulmonary resuscitation crucial to
increasing survival chances.

Aimed at elderly patients, the Para-Care smart mattress records in real
time a person’s heartbeat, respiratory rate, and the number of times he
or she turns or gets out of bed. This data generates diagnostic reports
automatically to enable detailed sleep analysis. In the case of
abnormalities, the smart mattress can notify the patient’s caregiver or
family members remotely, sending messages to their mobile devices.

The Para-Care smart mattress conducts physiological monitoring without
direct contact with the skin. Using Ayla embedded agents for wireless
connectivity, the Para-Care smart mattress does not require circuitry,
and it works with gauzes, pajamas, blankets and other materials. Even
patients with pressure sores or back injuries can use the smart mattress.

The smart mattress records and uploads data once per second, providing a
comprehensive picture of the person’s physiological state. The mattress
has a built-in SD card able to store three days’ worth of temporary data
in the event of an unexpected disconnection from the network.

Para-Care will showcase its smart mattress at CES 2017, being held
January 5 to 8 in Las Vegas. More information will be available at
Ayla’s CES Booth #41160 in the Smart Home Marketplace at the Sands
Hotel, Halls A – D.
