BGE Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month in Support of Diverse and Inclusive Communities, Customers and Employees

In celebration and support of the 2014 National Hispanic Heritage Month, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) recently wrapped up a series of events for employees and customers in recognition of the contributions, traditions and cultures of Hispanic Americans. BGE’s long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion involves supporting the communities the company serves through philanthropic giving, volunteer programs and economic development.

Throughout 2014, BGE has provided volunteer support and charitable contributions to Latino and Hispanic nonprofit organizations, including the Latino Providers Network, the U.S. Hispanic Youth Entrepreneur Education, the Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration and the Featherstone Foundation, in support of its signature computer literacy program, ‘Empowering Latinos: One Click at a Time.’

In addition, the company’s Baltimore chapter of the Organization of Latinos at Exelon (OLE), an employee resource group, has organized and participated in several volunteer, employee engagement and philanthropic events from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, 2014. National Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate independence days on Sept.16, Sept. 18, and Sept. 21, respectively.

BGE is honored and proud to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with its employees and customers throughout the central Maryland and has supported the following events:

  • Sept. 20 – Featherstone Foundation Celebration: Empowering Latinos One Click at a Time
  • Sept. 22 – Latino Providers Network Hispanic Heritage Luncheon
  • Sept. 25 – Baltimore City’s 8th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration
  • Oct. 3 – National Aquarium’s Hispanic Heritage Celebration
  • Oct. 4 – Anne Arundel Hispanic Health Festival
  • Oct. 6 – BGE volunteer event at the Esperanza Center. Volunteers organized a variety of donated items at the Center for families.

In addition to philanthropic and volunteer support, BGE continues to strengthen its support of a diverse and inclusive workforce. As such, BGE and parent company, Exelon, offer several Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that support diversity and inclusion and serve as a resource to the corporation and its employees. These groups are integral to the companies’ diversity and inclusion strategy, as they strengthen employee links, raise awareness, share knowledge, provide perspectives, improve recruitment, promote personal growth and serve as a forum for education, communication and professional development. Externally, they work to strengthen corporate citizenship, alert Exelon to new market opportunities and build ties to the communities in which the organization operates. The groups are self-initiated, voluntary, corporate-wide, free of charge and inclusive to all employees. Current ERGs represent various communities, including:

  • Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Individuals
  • Women
  • Military/Veterans
  • Developing Young Professionals
  • Asian Americans
  • Environmental Focused
