Care Center Animal Blood Bank Receives National Award From America’s Blood Centers

CINCINNATI–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Care
Center Animal Blood Bank
, a non-profit veterinary
blood bank located at the 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital, Care
Center
in Cincinnati, OH, has been awarded America’s
Blood Centers’
(ABC) National Award of Excellence for “Most Creative
Blood Drive in 2015.”

Just like humans, there are times when our pets urgently need blood or
plasma. Examples include trauma, blood clotting disorders, autoimmune
diseases, certain poisonings, and/or excessive bleeding from illness or
surgery. And also like humans, finding donors can be a challenge. Last
year, Care Center Animal Blood Bank partnered with Hoxworth
Blood Center
at the University of Cincinnati during their annual
human blood drive in an effort to increase both human and canine donors.
By encouraging participants to bring their dogs for donor eligibility
screening at the same time, they had the highest number of human donors
in their 5-year history, with the canine current donor list reaching the
hundreds.

“The idea of combining the blood drive so both human and animal
recipients would benefit was successful beyond measure,” said Alecia
Lipton, Hoxworth Public Information Officer. “We count on the generosity
of volunteer blood donors and corporate partnerships in order to meet
the needs of patients in 31 area hospitals. We are grateful to Care
Center for their commitment to our mission and we congratulate them on
receiving this national honor.”

The award
was presented by Ronald Sacher, MD, Hoxworth Blood Center Medical
Director, to Doug Hoffman, DVM, Care Center CEO, on Saturday, April 23,
2016, at the ABC Annual Volunteer Awards Luncheon at Montgomery
Inn Boathouse
in Cincinnati.

“In 2015, through the generosity of donors, the Care Center Animal Blood
Bank collected 150 units of blood, allowing many animals to be helped.
Successful events like our blood drive allow us to continue saving the
lives of pets across the region,” said Doug Hoffman, DVM. “We are
committed to the program and honored to be nationally recognized by
America’s Blood Centers and our friends at Hoxworth.”
