Edelson PC Expands to West Coast with Launch of San Francisco Office

Nation’s Leading Consumer Privacy Law Firm Sets up Shop in Center of
Tech Industry

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Edelson
PC
, a leading national plaintiffs’ class action firm recognized for
its groundbreaking work representing consumers in technology and privacy
cases against some of the country’s largest tech companies, today
announced the opening of a new office in San Francisco. It is the second
location for the Chicago-based firm, which has won more than $1 billion
for consumers since its start in 2007.

“The key decisions impacting consumers when it comes to new technology,
and particularly digital privacy rights, are taking place every day in
the Bay Area. So it’s no coincidence that more and more of the firm’s
cases are litigated here,” explained founder Jay
Edelson
.

The firm’s expansion comes at the same time as another milestone: on
November 2, the U.S. Supreme Court heard argument in one of the firm’s
more high-profile cases, Spokeo, Inc. v. Robins, which seeks to
hold the people-search website accountable under the Fair Credit
Reporting Act for posting false information about consumers. The
potentially precedent-setting privacy case is being closely watched by
Silicon Valley, as more than a half-dozen of the tech giants submitted
amicus briefs in support of Spokeo. Meanwhile, some of the nation’s most
significant consumer, employee, civil, and intellectual property rights
groups have filed briefs in support of Edelson’s position.

Rafey
Balabanian
, the firm’s head of litigation, will serve as the
managing partner of the new office. Balabanian has led numerous
groundbreaking privacy cases, including ones against Netflix, LinkedIn,
Twitter and Facebook.

“We look forward to sharing a home with the tech companies that have
such a profound impact on our daily lives. We hope that our presence
alone will serve as an important reminder that Silicon Valley’s
entrepreneurial spirit should not give way to consumers’ rights,” said
Balabanian.

Joining Balabanian right away are two Northwestern law school grads from
the Chicago office, Alicia Hwang, an associate and the director of the
firm’s summer associate program, and Jennifer Lee, an incoming
associate. Attorneys Eve-Lynn Bluse and J. Dominique Larry, along with
incoming associate Todd Logan, a recent Harvard law school grad, will be
immediately affiliated with the new office in addition to the Chicago
office. The San Francisco office also has immediate plans to hire two
lateral associates and several law clerks from the neighboring law
schools.

These hiring efforts are a part of the firm’s larger growth trend;
Edelson has gone from just a handful of employees (and a few attorneys)
to over 50 employees (and some 25 attorneys). Most recently, the Chicago
office welcomed partner Alex Nguyen, a former federal prosecutor and
deputy chief of the cybercrime unit for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in
the Eastern District of Virginia, as well as two lateral associates and
four law school graduates from its summer program.
