FDA Makes the Right Move on Making Hearing Aids more Accessible, Says CTA
ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The following statement is attributed to Gary Shapiro, president and
CEO, Consumer Technology Association (CTA)TM, regarding the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) announcement on that it will
allow the sale of most hearings aids without a medical evaluation for
consumers aged 18 and over:
“The FDA’s action moves hearing aids closer to the same, easily
accessible shelf as over-the-counter eyeglasses. This will be a major
win for the tens of millions of Americans affected by hearing loss.
Lifting these restrictions will allow for further technological
advancements that can result in more innovative and less expensive
hearing aid solutions. CTA is proud of our members’ role in helping
shape the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
report Hearing Health Care for Adults, Priorities for Improving
Access and Affordability, which included recommendations that drove
the FDA’s decision. We look forward to working with the FDA to open this
innovation-driven market and provide new hope for those living with
hearing loss.”
