It’s back-to-school season; GEICO asks, ‘Does your driving make the grade?’

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Rides to the beach have been swapped for bus trips to school, and those
boardwalk fries are a distant memory as students hit the books. With
back-to-school season in full swing, GEICO wants drivers to make sure
they’re focusing on safety 100 percent of the time wherever they’re
heading.

GEICO’s Safe Driving Report

Whether it’s your first ride to school as a newly-licensed driver or
your routine morning commute to work, GEICO has tips for how to help
make it a safe ride.

  1. Get enough rest: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) states that adults need at least seven hours of sleep a night,
and teens even more at eight to 10 hours. According to the CDC,
driving drowsy can significantly slow reaction times if a nearby
vehicle stops quickly or a pedestrian unexpectedly steps out to cross.
  2. Leave distractions out of the equation: Driving by itself
becomes complicated enough, especially for newer drivers who haven’t
logged many hours on the road. Adding other tasks behind the wheel
like texting, changing a playlist or setting a GPS destination could
increase a driver’s risk of crashing according to the National Highway
    Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  3. Take it easy in school zones: When the flashers turn on,
drivers must adhere to the posted speed limit in a school zone and
should always watch out for students crossing. In addition to school
zones, drivers should take extra care while traveling near school
buses. Since buses make frequent stops, leave extra following
distance, and never attempt to pass a bus with its stop arm extended,
as it’s against the law according to NHTSA. Also, it’s dangerous and
it could result in a ticket with a hefty fine.
