National Forum Gears up to Help Moms Take Care of Their Hearts and Their Families

Cholesterol risk pilot in Austin, Texas will target mothers; asks
them to learn their cholesterol risk to prevent cardiovascular disease

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The National Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention will pilot a
public awareness campaign that encourages mothers to manage their
cholesterol risk to prevent heart attacks and stroke in Austin this
July. The purpose of the pilot is to develop messaging and sustainable
communication tools organizations can use to embolden mothers throughout
the U.S. to manage their and their families’ cholesterol.

“Even though we know how to prevent and control high cholesterol,
millions of Americans have it, putting them at increased risk for a
heart attack or stroke. The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness
that cholesterol can be controlled and prompt family decision-makers to
make it a priority,” said John
Clymer
, executive director of the National
Forum for Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention
. “This pilot
initiative will create messaging and tools organizations can use to
reduce cholesterol risk among mothers and their families. It is
important because, to the best of our knowledge, no such toolkit
currently exists.”

The National Forum created the pilot campaign to respond to the growing
number of Americans who have or are at risk for high cholesterol. High
cholesterol
is one of the top controllable risk factors for coronary
heart disease, heart attack and stroke. Yet, today, one in two men and
one in three women have high cholesterol at some point in their life.

“Cardiovascular disease is America’s number one killer – causing one out
of every three deaths – and high cholesterol is a major risk factor in
this largely preventable disease,” said Dr. Janet Wright, Executive
Director of Million Hearts®. “Million Hearts emphasizes cholesterol
management as one key strategy to help prevent a million heart attacks
and strokes. The National Forum’s efforts to raise awareness around
cholesterol risk should contribute to better cardiovascular health
across the nation.”

The National Forum has partnered with various local and national
stakeholders to carry out their cholesterol risk pilot, including the Austin/Travis
County Health and Human Services
. The pilot is slated to launch
early July 2016. It is made possible through support from Sanofi
and Regeneron.
