Operator’s Mobile Commerce Trend Report Reveals Moms Feel They Need to Be Involved in Gifting to Avoid Feeling Unappreciated on Mother’s Day

60% of Men Say They Struggle and Don’t Know What to Get the
Mothers in Their Lives

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Moms and Dads across the country confess they are struggling with
Mother’s Day planning and gifting. Operator, the mobile commerce app
that makes shopping as easy as a text, has released new survey data
showing that Mother’s Day is a challenging holiday with the potential to
create strife and hurt feelings if planning and gifting does not show
effort and thoughtfulness — and the statistics are surprising.

Nearly half of dads surveyed say their significant other has contributed
to the planning for Mother’s Day to avoid hurt feelings. Likewise, about
half of the moms surveyed confessed they have had hurt feelings and felt
unappreciated by lack of planning or a gift that seemed to have little
or no thought put into it.

Additional highlights from the survey concluded that:

  • 60% of dads say they never know what to get for Mother’s Day
  • 60% of dads say their significant other resorts to dropping hints
  • Nearly half of all moms resort to dropping hints
  • 1 out of 3 moms admit they have secretly purchased gifts for
    themselves for Mother’s Day
  • The majority of moms (85%) state that Mother’s Day is important to them
  • 75% of dads and over 50% of moms wish there were an easier way to get
Mother’s Day and other gifting “right”

2016 Report Methodology

The Operator April 2016 Survey was conducted between March 26 and April
3, 2016, among 1,073 U.S. residents ages 18 and over, using an online
survey. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The
magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number
of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results.
In this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result
does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points from
the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with
all persons in the universe represented by the sample. The margin of
error for any subgroups will be slightly higher.
