Redfin Ranks the Top 10 Cities for Walkable Newly Constructed Homes

Philadelphia, Chicago and Cleveland Have the Largest Portions of
Walkable Newly Constructed Homes

SEATTLE–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Philadelphia ranked first among the top 10 cities leading the way in
walkable new home construction, according to Redfin (www.redfin.com),
the next-generation real estate brokerage. Redfin ranked cities with
populations of 200,000 or more according to the share of newly
constructed homes listed so far in 2016 that have Walk Score®
ratings higher than their citywide scores. The highest-ranked cities are
seeing the most housing construction activity in their most walkable
neighborhoods.

Ninety-one percent of Philadelphia’s newly constructed homes have a Walk
Score higher than the citywide score (78). Chicago is the
next best city, with 89 percent of newly constructed homes having a Walk
Score higher than the city’s Walk Score of 78. Cleveland, with 88
percent of new homes more walkable than Cleveland itself (59), ranks
third. Here’s the full ranking:

“Philly is on fire when it comes to walkable new construction,” said
Redfin agent Tom Lewis. “In nearly every direction you look there are
new apartments or condos going up and older buildings are being
rehabilitated. A lot of these new homes are in extremely walkable areas
that are getting more walkable by the day; places like Northern
Liberties
, Fishtown,
Frankford,
South
Philly
and Point
Breeze
are seeing a lot of new construction activity. Buyers who are
getting priced out of New York and Washington D.C. are flocking to
Philly and developers are rushing to meet the demand. A lot of the new
construction buildings are also mixed-use, which in turn is increasing
walkability throughout the city.”

“Remember that walkability is more
than just sidewalks
. It’s also about building destinations along the
way,” said Eric Scharnhorst, livability analyst at Redfin. “New homes,
services, shops and schools can all create invitations to walk, and this
means that new construction projects can help improve the Walk Score of
a place.”

Greensboro, North Carolina, Corpus Christi, Texas, Albuquerque, New
Mexico, Plano, Texas and Bakersfield, California all had the smallest
shares of newly-constructed homes rated more walkable than their
respective city’s Walk Score.
