Squaremouth Trend Report: New Data Shows Travelers Adapting After Terrorism
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–While the continued threat of terrorism has not stopped Americans from
traveling, the latest report from leading travel insurance comparison
site Squaremouth
shows a growing interest in travel insurance coverage for terrorism, as
well as a shift in travel to certain European destinations.
Repeated Attacks Spark Greater Interest in Terrorism Coverage
Most travel insurance policies include Terrorism coverage, but with
multiple attacks across Europe this year, more travelers are searching
specifically for this coverage by using Squaremouth’s “Terrorism” filter
when purchasing a policy. (See

The percentage of Squaremouth customers searching specifically for
Terrorism coverage nearly tripled between January and July of this
year, from 3.2% to 8.6% -
During the same period in 2015, the percentage of customers using the
“Terrorism” filter never rose above 3% -
Squaremouth saw the greatest surge in customers searching for
Terrorism coverage in the month following the March
terrorist attacks in Brussels
Popular European Destinations Level Off After Continued Attacks
In the month following the November
attacks in Paris, the most popular European destinations saw
significant increases in the number of customers insuring trips to those
countries compared to the same period in the previous year. As the
region experienced more attacks, these increases have shown a downward
trend, and the number of travelers to France decreased in the months
following the attacks in Brussels and Nice.
Alternative European Destinations See Increased Growth
Travelers may be choosing to visit alternative European destinations, as
the number of customers traveling to countries like Ireland, Iceland,
Switzerland and Portugal continues to grow following recent attacks. See
