Susan G. Komen to Celebrate 27th Annual D.C. Race for the Cure on National Mall, May 7

5K run/walk will raise critical funds for breast cancer patients in
the D.C. area

WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® series, the world’s largest
fundraising event for breast cancer, kicks off on the National Mall on
Saturday, May 7, during Mother’s Day weekend. The D.C. area 5K run and
fitness walk has raised more than $36 million for breast cancer support
services provided in the D.C. Metropolitan area during the last 25 years.

For Judith A. Salerno, president and CEO of Susan G. Komen and former
D.C. resident, the fight against breast cancer in the National Capital
Region is a personal one. “Washington, D.C. has the highest death rate
from breast cancer in the U.S. Our goal is to change that dire statistic
by funding programs that ensure everyone has the access and resources to
battle breast cancer regardless of their economic circumstances,” she
said.

Salerno noted that women in D.C. are diagnosed with breast cancer at a
rate 20 percent higher than the national average and are dying from the
disease at a rate 40 percent higher. Proceeds from the annual D.C. Race
help support 300 community grants to local programs in the D.C. area.

Race Highlights

Braxton Family Values’ reality star Traci Braxton, who lost her
grandmother to breast cancer, will entertain and participate in the Race
as captain of the Crowns and Cleats Team.

“I’m delighted to take part in this special day of honoring survivors,
their families and friends and those walking in memory of loved ones,”
said Braxton. “I hope people meet me on the Mall this Mother’s Day
weekend and join this special cause.”

Elite runner and Olympic hopeful, Sarah Brown of Northern Virginia will
lead a Race warm-up for participants before kick-off. Brown, who was
