Taste of Japan in Wellington: Adam Liaw Showcases Simple Japanese Food at Home for Kiwis

Culinary seminar on making authentic Japanese dishes at home

WELLINGTON, New Zealand–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) hosted a
culinary seminar on Wednesday, 5 May at Shed 5 in Lambton Harbour in
Wellington, New Zealand to showcase how easy it is to make delicious
authentic Japanese food at home for New Zealand consumers.

The seminar included a live demonstration from Adam Liaw, cook, author,
2010 MasterChef Australia winner, host of the television series Destination
Flavour
and Japanese cuisine goodwill ambassador, along with
Wellington based Japanese cuisine chef Tatsushi Mikuni.

Liaw and Mikuni engaged an eager audience of 58 New Zealand consumers
with a 90 minute, interactive demonstration on the proper way to prepare
Japanese rice, making miso soup complete with dashi (broth), a
teriyaki of Japanese yellowtail from Ehime prefecture and grilled
Japanese scallops from Hokkaido prefecture, answering questions from the
audience along the way. Attendees also had an opportunity to sit down
and have a bite with Liaw for a tasting of the menu featured in the
demonstration, paired with two different Japanese sakes.

Attendees comments and questions on the seminar included, “It was
fantastic! I’d like to try to make Japanese food at home.”; “Where can I
buy Japanese ingredients?”; and “How do I choose the correct seasoning
for an authentic Japanese taste?” After the seminar, an attendee was
even spotted at a supermarket nearby saying “I’m going to cook the menu
we learned today for dinner tonight!” The seminar is a part of the
ministry’s ongoing Taste
of Japan
campaign, which also features a television commercial
airing on TV3 and the National Geographic channel, in New Zealand, also
featuring Liaw.

This project was implemented as a consignment business of the Food
Industry Affairs Bureau, Food Culture and Market Development Division of
the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
