Thousands to Take Part in City of Hope’s Walk for Hope to Fight Women’s Cancers

20th annual event, presented by Staples,
raises funds to benefit women everywhere

DUARTE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–For two decades, thousands of cancer survivors, patients, families and
friends have participated in City of Hope’s annual Walk for Hope. They
do it to raise money and awareness for women’s cancers and to honor
mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, aunts and friends who have fought —
or even will fight — the disease.

On Sunday, Nov. 6, nearly 10,000 participants will come together once
again to help researchers and scientists create new cancer treatments
that benefit women everywhere.

“I don’t walk for any one reason,” said walker and donor Yvonne Bernal.
“I walk on behalf of ALL women who have had or will experience breast
cancer. There is pride in knowing that we are working together to create
a world where cancer will no longer be a threat to women or rob them of
another year with their loved ones. I walk in an effort to help make
this world a better, brighter, happier place to be. I walk for them.”

The first walk, in 1996, was a small affair and now, the Walk for Hope
series has raised more than $38 million for City of Hope’s Women’s
Cancers Program — benefitting research, treatment and education programs
for all cancers affecting women.

The 20th annual signature event, presented by Staples – a
5K/2K walk through the heart of City of Hope’s campus – is unique in
that it’s held in the same location where breakthrough research is
conducted and where lifesaving treatment is delivered. A highlight of
the event is the opportunity to wave, cheer and salute cancer patients
watching from City of Hope Helford Clinical Research Hospital.

Women’s cancers will affect one in three women in her lifetime. One of
those women is cancer survivor Linh Quan. Diagnosed with breast cancer
after a routine mammogram at 40 years old, Quan went to City of Hope,
where she knew from experience that she would be in good hands. Four
years later, Quan is now cancer-free.

“I am grateful that City of Hope was there to provide treatments for my
father and myself,” said Quan. “Every time I wanted to give up I thought
of how my dad fought for his life, to be with us. I have a son that I
want to be able to live to see graduate out of high school and college,
marry and have kids, so I can be a grandma. So that’s what I fought for:
my family.”

Event-day festivities begin at 8 a.m., opening ceremony begins at 9:45
a.m. and the Walk begins at 10 a.m. This year’s Survivors Pavilion is
supported by BEHR®, and an official finish line is presented by The
Walking Company. In addition, the event will feature an expo area — with
a special sign decorating booth with Staples — a live music performance,
a special ceremony with a survivors’ moment, giveaways, an interactive
photo booth and food trucks.

Online registration closes on Saturday, Nov. 5. To register for Walk for
Hope Los Angeles or to donate, visit www.walk4hope.org.
