NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#50CompaniesCare–Time Inc.’s People reveals its first annual list of “Companies That
Care,” spotlighting 50 U.S. companies with 1,000 or more employees that
have succeeded in business while also demonstrating respect, compassion,
and concern for their communities, their employees, and the environment.
People partnered with research and consulting firm Great Place to Work
to identify the top U.S. companies that best fit the criteria.
Salesforce, the San Francisco-based cloud computing company that sells
customer relationship management tools, landed the No. 1 spot on
People’s 2017 list of “50 Companies That Care” because of its laser
focus on “Ohana” (an inclusive, supportive, and open environment based
on the Hawaiian concept of family culture), serious dedication to
philanthropy (Salesforce has given out more than $160 million in
grants), and community service (employees are eligible for seven paid
days off per year to support their pet causes). In 2015, Courtney
Loomis, director of recruiting and employee events at Salesforce, helped
first and second graders in Sri Lanka with reading and writing. “I came
back with a renewed perspective on life, love, and compassion for
mankind,” she tells People.

Salesforce, in addition to the 49 other companies that made the list,
will be featured in the April 10, 2017 issue of People, which hits
newsstands nationwide on Friday, March 31. NuStar, one of the largest
independent liquids and pipeline operators, landed in the Top 10 for
loaning the company jet to move a family and their dogs to a remote
Caribbean island; St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital came in at No. 7
for not only treating children with catastrophic illnesses for free, but
for caring for the caregivers, too, offering onsite counseling services
and special support for those with loved ones deployed in the military.

To identify the “50 Companies That Care,” People teamed up with Great
Place to Work to produce the list using the research and consulting
firm’s extensive database and inside knowledge of outstanding workplaces
around the globe. The list is based on nearly 370,000 employees’
responses to surveys that asked them to rate how their companies treat
them on a day-to-day basis. The list also takes into account employees’
personal stories about the difference their workplaces have made in
their lives and in their communities – and the generosity of their
organizations’ benefits, financial donations, and volunteerism.

In his editor’s letter, Jess Cagle, Editor-in-Chief of People, writes:
“It’s a pleasure to celebrate companies that take special care of their
employees and communities, and to tell the inspiring stories of the
workers and families who’ve benefited from these firms’ compassion and
respect. Our list of Companies That Care is also a great resource for
consumers who want to support businesses that give back. I don’t really
have any need for petroleum storage, but NuStar’s (No. 10 on the list)
generous sharing of its corporate jet with workers in need makes me want
to be a customer.”

Michael Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work, adds, “We are elated to work
with People to call out these extraordinary organizations. They
deserve attention — not just for making life better for their employees
— but also for demonstrating the profound difference a company can make
when it fosters a culture of caring.”
