Winning Game Plan – Plan Ahead for Super Safe Sunday Driving

Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk

SACRAMENTO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–This Super Sunday there will be lots of game day socializing that may
include drinking. That’s why the California Office of Traffic Safety
(OTS), California Highway Patrol and local law enforcement officials
statewide are urging football fans to call the play now: drinking OR
driving. If you plan on drinking on Super Bowl Sunday, designate a sober
driver to get you home safely.

“Super Bowl celebrations are super fun,” said OTS Director Rhonda Craft.
“But it’s important to remember that a day of fun can quickly take a
turn for the worse. When you plan for game day, plan for how you or your
guests will be getting home safe.”

Law enforcement across the state will be mounting special patrols
looking for impaired drivers. No matter what type of celebration you
plan to partake in, the California Office of Traffic Safety offers a few
tips to help ensure that it’s a safe and fun one.

  • Before your festivities take place, have a game plan that
    includes a designated sober driver.
  • If you plan to attend a party or enjoy a night out on the town,
consider utilizing a sober ride or taxi to your destination, so
that driving impaired at the end of the night isn’t an option.
  • If you’re hosting a party, encourage all guests to designate a sober
ride in advance, and offer to arrange for alternate transportation for
those who need it. Ensure that you have plenty of DDrinks —
non-alcoholic drinks for Designated Drivers – on hand so that those
responsible for remaining sober throughout the night have something
tasty to sip on other than soda or water.
  • If someone you know has been drinking and tries to drive, take their
keys and help them get home safely.
  • If you see someone on the road who you suspect is drunk, don’t
    hesitate to call 911.
  • If you are headed to the game itself or anywhere in the Bay Area Super
    Weekend, check with www.superbowl50traffic.com
    well beforehand.

OTS encourages Californians to keep the DDVIP program in mind this
month. If you’re planning for a night out, be sure to download the DDVIP
mobile app – available for free in the iTunes and Google Play stores –
to locate bars and restaurants near you that offer complimentary
beverages and special discounts for designated drivers. If you plan to
keep the festivities at home, log on to https://www.facebook.com/CaliforniaOTS
for a list of fun DDrink recipes to serve your designated driver guests.
