Summers in Germany, as a consequence of global warming, have become dryer, which has weakened many native tree varieties and made them more susceptible to infestations of the bark beetle. While some forestries are taking an active approach to the problem by cutting down affected trees in an effort to halt the expansion of the beetle's spread, others are taking a passive approach to let the infestation run its natural course and ultimately leave a stronger forest behind.
