City of Hope Sponsors College Leadership Tour in Major Bid to Recruit Hispanic Students into the Healthcare Industry

As the growth of the Hispanic community continues to outpace all other groups in the U.S., City of Hope is taking the lead to help educate university students on the benefits of pursuing a career in healthcare by sponsoring a five-city College Leadership Tour across America. The goal of the tour is to promote the importance of embracing your cultural values as an enabler of authentic leadership and career success for the next generation of Hispanic professionals. City of Hope, a leading research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases, is seizing on this opportunity to conduct recruitment outreach specifically toward Hispanic students who might be interested in, or prime candidates for, a career in the healthcare industry.

The need for more Hispanics in healthcare is especially critical at this time.

Between 2000 and 2010, the Hispanic population grew by 43 percent, or four times the nation’s 9.7 percent growth rate. At 50.5 million people today, Hispanics are already the largest minority in the U.S. and their numbers continue to rise faster than any other group. Yet, according to the American Medical Association Physician Masterfile, only 5 percent of physicians in the U.S. are Hispanic. This contributes to the many tension points that exist with the community, such as the lack of medical research specifically targeting Hispanics; the absence of healthcare information tailored for their needs; and their disproportionate burden of preventable disease, death, and injury.

According to Stephanie Neuvirth, Chief Human Resources and Diversity Officer at City of Hope, “City of Hope is transforming the future of health. Every day we turn science into practical benefit. To do this we need more Latino healthcare employees and researchers to help drive our efforts. We are at the advent of personalized medicine, and appreciate that ethnicity matters in cancer and diabetes research, prevention and treatment. Recruitment of Hispanic students into the industry will result in more Hispanic clinical and research professionals, who can more readily address the tension points with the community through education, prevention and treatment.”

The College Leadership Tour is being packaged by Spanish-language media leader Televisa Publishing, who is coordinating sponsors throughout the U.S. looking to recruit Hispanic students for their industries. The five-city tour kicks off Friday, June 7, in San Diego, and will run through Hispanic Heritage Month in September, hitting other stops in New Jersey, Colorado, Florida and Texas.

“With the increasing number of Latino graduates across the country, it became obvious that a college tour to empower tomorrow’s leaders was necessary in a major bid to recruit Hispanic students to the healthcare industry,” said Madelin Bosakewich, U.S. and International Sales Director for Televisa Publishing + Digital. “Teaming with leading research and treatment center City of Hope was a natural pairing for the five-city tour across America.”

According to Center for Hispanic Leadership (CHL) CEO Glenn Llopis, keynote speaker on the tour, “As their numbers continue to increase, we need more Hispanic leaders and role models in all industries, but particularly in healthcare for two major reasons: 1) professional healthcare is not necessarily something Hispanics were raised with or see the value in, and therefore they may not seek it out; and 2) the urgency is greater in this industry because the lack of research and outreach to the community directly affects their health and well-being. City of Hope is to be commended for taking a leadership role in reaching out to Hispanic students in particular and making a commitment to the community in general through programs like this.”

In support of the College Leadership Tour, City of Hope has made a further commitment to Hispanic leadership development through the Hispanic Leadership Academy, CHL’s online training and virtual classroom. City of Hope will support 250 student certifications on the online training platform for each of the five tour locations.
