New York Giants’ Mark Herzlich Calls on the Public to Join Him in the Next Generation of Manhood – a Movement Started by A CALL TO MEN to Promote Healthy, Respectful Manhood and Prevent Violence and Discrimination against Women and Girls

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In a public service announcement launched last night at A CALL TO MEN™’s
Envision a World gala, New
York Giants’ Mark Herzlich called on the public
to join him as
part of the Next Generation of Manhood, a movement started by A CALL TO
MEN to promote healthy, respectful manhood and prevent violence and
discrimination against all women and girls. A CALL TO MEN is a violence
prevention organization and respected leader on issues of masculinity,
male socialization and its intersection with violence, and preventing
violence against all women and girls.

Research
by the World Health Organization
shows that men and boys who adhere
to rigid, traditional notions of gender roles and masculinity are more
likely to report having used violence against a partner.

“Rejecting rigid notions of masculinity and embracing and promoting a
healthy, respectful manhood prevents violence against women, sexual
assault, sexual harassment, bullying and many other social ills,”
Herzlich said. “Those who join me in the Next Generation of Manhood will
make a positive contribution to their families, their communities and
humanity at large. I am proud to lead this movement with A CALL TO MEN.”

The overwhelming majority of men in the United States don’t perpetrate
violence against women, yet all types of violence against women –
including rampant sexual assault on college campuses – is at epidemic
levels. A CALL TO MEN cites the collective socialization of manhood as a
contributing factor that allows violence and discrimination against
women and girls to exist.

A CALL TO MEN Co-Founder Tony Porter, whose TED Talk on healthy,
respectful manhood went viral, explained: “Far too often, we men and
boys define ourselves by devaluing women and girls. We have been taught
– and we teach our boys – that men are dominating, so women must be
submissive. Men are strong, so therefore women are vulnerable and weak.
Men are superior, so women are inferior. Men are in charge, which means
women are not. We reinforce these teachings through colloquial sayings
and phrases like ‘You throw like a girl’ and ‘man up’ that are so
engrained in our culture we don’t give them a second thought. Changing
what we teach men and boys about women and girls is the key to ending
the violence and discrimination that not only hurts women, but holds men
hostage from being their authentic selves.”

Herzlich and those who joined him at the gala event, have committed to
live by A CALL TO MEN’s principles of healthy, respectful manhood:

1. Embracing and expressing a full range of emotion.

2. Not conforming to the pressure to always be fearless and in control.

3. Valuing a woman’s life, treating all people equally and promoting the
betterment of humanity.

4. Not using language that denigrates women and girls.

5. Developing an interest in the experience of women and girls, outside
of sexual conquest.

6. Modeling a healthy, respectful manhood to other men and boys.

“This campaign is for everyone who will embrace and promote the
principles of healthy, respectful manhood. We are all in this together
for the betterment of humanity,” Herzlich said.
