La Raza wins national award for a book about issues affecting Latinos in Chicago amid COVID-19

La Raza newspaper has won a national award for a recently published bilingual book that touches on issues affecting the Latino community in Chicago during the pandemic. “Clamor Chicago: Fight, Challenges, and Successes of the Latino Community Facing COVID-19 and Other Issues” recently won the first place/gold award at the 2021 International Latino Book Awards in the Victor Villaseñor Best Latino Focus Nonfiction – Spanish or Bilingual category.
La Raza published the book in celebration of its 50-year anniversary. Written in Spanish and English, the book is a compilation of La Raza’s in-depth articles reported in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic by journalists Belhú Sanabria, Marcela Cartagena, Irene Tostado, Antonio Zavala and Jesús Del Toro and also included an article from special contributor Steven Arroyo.
Jesús Del Toro, Director of La Raza, said, “Clamor Chicago,” clamor meaning outcry, “showcases the ingenuity and resiliency of Chicago’s Hispanic community during the harsh times of the pandemic and other significant events including the 2020 presidential election, the 2020 Census and the fight for racial justice.”
